Yesterday the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released their sixth and final synthesis report (AR6) and the findings are bleak. The report warns that, in the next ten years, the planet will push past the point of catastrophic warming. It goes on to say that nations need to immediately transition away from fossil fuels and reduce Green House Gas (GHG) emissions. The AR6 is one of the most definitive reports ever published on climate change with one of the most direct and dire outlooks for the planet.

If immediate action is not taken, climate disasters will become more extreme faster than humanity is able to adapt. Basic components of Earth’s natural systems will be fundamentally and irrevocably altered. Beyond the fact that economies will be disrupted and access to basic goods and services will be interrupted, climate change will increasingly claim the lives of humans and animals around the globe.

The good news is that many nations and companies are working to reduce their GHG emissions, but that is not enough. According to the US EPA Supply Chain Guidance, supply chains often account for more than 90% of an organization’s GHG emissions. Any nation or company that wants to contribute to a climate solution must not only reduce their internal GHG emissions, but ensure that GHG emissions are being reduced across their supply chains.

Unfortunately, Supply Chain Sustainability is not an area where nations and companies have enjoyed success in the past. Based on the AR6, this is not a time for organizations to learn or experiment, that time has past. To avert climate disaster, it is time to take strong and decisive action. Nations and companies need to identify and access existing experts who can help them reduce GHG emissions throughout their supply chains. New Dominion Consulting is a firm that has the knowledge, expertise, and experience to help achieve supply chain GHG reductions.
